Believe it or not, little kiddos, your grandmama used to play basketball back in grammar school and high school! I know, it's hard to believe! I was a "forward" and we only played with three forwards on one half of the court and three "guards' on the other half. We were not allowed to cross over the "half" line. Crazy....right?
Actually, during my junior year, we started what was called a "rover" and that person played forward and guard and was the only ballplayer on our team that was allowed to go back and forth from one end of the court to the other. I could have never played full court like that do nowadays! You had to really be in shape for that!
Can you guess which person is me? I'll give you a hint......I was the tallest person on the team, although, I wasn't as tall as it looks in the picture below! I was 5'10" in the ninth grade when this picture was taken and I never grew another inch after the ninth grade. I was 14 years old.
When we traveled, we all wore matching outfits. We had navy/white houndstooth skirts and navy blue vest. We really did look awesome! We had the best team around. NOBODY could beat us! We even played our local varsity high school team and beat them! We were really good! We had a lot of talent, but we mainly feared losing because of scared to death of what our coach would do. He had quite a temper! He actually threw a chair on the sidelines one time! Also, I'll never forget the time he yelled at me on the court and told me that if I did that again he would kick me across the court! It was because when I recovered the ball right under the goal, instead of laying the ball back up, I threw it out to my teammate. Hmmm....big mistake and he let me know it!
